The new Player Selection Policy includes new definitions for tryouts participants:

Inside Players: current BWHA members, players who have relocated into Simcoe County, and girls playing with Minor Hockey associations not affiliated with OWHA (e.g. OMHA)

Import A Players: Import Players from designated Central Ontario associations who are trying out for a team where their current association does not offer a team at that level or higher. (See chart below)

Import B Players: Import Players who are registered with another OWHA Association and who are not Import A players. (See chart below)

*The above eligibility chart is PROJECTED ONLY. Final Import Player eligibility will be confirmed prior to tryouts.

NOTE: all Import Players – both IMPORT A and IMPORT B – will require a properly approved Permission to Tryout form issued by their current OWHA association.

Returning Player Exceptions
A player currently registered to another OWHA organization who was a BWHA member in 2022-2023 can be granted an exception to not be considered an Import Player if they fully participated in tryouts and made themselves available for section to all eligible competitive teams during last year’s tryouts. If this applies to you, please contact the Director of Competitive Program for more information: [email protected].

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTOINS

Why is the BWHA limiting the number of Import players selected to any team?
The BWHA is dedicated to developing our members and creating opportunities for them to excel in hockey at their highest potential. The BWHA also aims to create opportunities for capable new players from outside the association who aspire to join our Barrie Sharks competitive teams. This policy ensures a balance between our development objectives and inclusivity for outside players, while maintaining membership stability by minimizing player fluctuations season to season.

Are girls who play for OMHA Minor Hockey associations considered Transfer Players
No – players registered to an OMHA Minor Hockey association who have not been registered to an OWHA organization and will not require a release or Permission to Skate, are not considered Transfer Players, and may be selected without restriction, the same as a BWHA member.

Aside from the selection limits, are coaches provided any other guidance on the selection of Import players?
Import Players selected to AA or A teams must be clearly superior to any BWHA member they are selected over. For BB and B teams, Import Players, if allowed, must be clearly among the top skill level players to be selected to the team.

If a nearby association decides to introduce tryouts for a new team, could that change IMPORT A and IMPORT B player eligibility?
The BWHA has published a preliminary list that indicates IMPORT A and IMPORT B player eligibility by level and category to assist with tryout planning. If any changes are required, an updated list will be published on BWHA.ca by Sunday, April 15, 2024.

What if I moved during the past season?
Players who moved into Simcoe County from outside of the region, or those who moved from within Simcoe County to a new primary residence that is now closer to Barrie than their former association, may apply for a relocation exception.  If this applies to you, please contact the Director of Competitive Program for more information: [email protected].
